WE OURSELVES are Big Brother Now....
A rather extreme interpretation (really?) from a student-friend at The University of Colorado who wanted to get in on the act. In all fairness, I don't know where he stands on Google; but he does jump at the chance to be radical. And yes, the writing does sound like me—I found some line-editing necessary. Believe me, folks, if I'd come up with this I'd just admit it because I think it's hilarious.
Google has to be laughing itself into a stupor. It didn't disguise itself and sneak in the back door—it walked right in the front, sat down on the couch, and put its dirty feet up on the coffee table.
Never before has a methodology so sinister been adopted by such a large number of supposedly free-thinking individuals—and without them even knowing it. We need not worry about "Big Brother" spying on us—we need to worry that we ourselves are becoming Big Brother by "strongly encouraging" people not to be creative but to act "safe" and produce things that will be immediately accepted by the masses. It's no longer a question of spying; now, people will automatically, subconsciously think and behave properly because doing otherwise means non-existence—and that's much worse than getting arrested or shot. Martyrs live on for centuries.
Ironically, everyone I know in research is a Republican—and they all use Yahoo. So, we have Republicans using a search engine that judges based on "content of character," and we have Liberals and Democrats using a search engine based on gossip and popular opinion as expressed by a limited, non-representative portion of the population.
How can this not be funny?
